The Right Table Lamp for the Living Room: Size, Light, Style

Handgefertigte Lunatre Keramik-Tischlampe im Wohnzimmer neben einem Samtsofa

The table lamp is the most underestimated light source in the living room. While ceiling lights and floor lamps provide the base illumination, it is the table lamp that truly creates what makes a living room feel inviting: pools of light – warm zones that structure the space and create atmosphere. Here you can read what really matters when choosing one.

The Right Size: Proportion Trumps Centimetres

The most important rule of thumb: the table lamp should suit the piece of furniture it stands on. On a sideboard 80–90 cm high, a large table lamp of 70–85 cm looks assured and stately. On the side table next to the sofa, 40–55 cm is ideal – the lower edge of the lampshade should sit roughly at eye level when you are seated. This way, nothing dazzles, and the light falls exactly where you need it.

A second consideration is the diameter: the shade should never be wider than the table beneath it. This is why our models are almost always available in several sizes – such as the Estetica in 42 or 82 cm height.

Light Colour and Bulbs: Warm Wins

For the living room, the rule is: 2700 Kelvin or less (warm white). Cooler light belongs in the kitchen or study. A fabric shade – as used on our handcrafted lamps – diffuses the light softly while casting an atmospheric glow both upward and downward. Dimmable bulbs are worthwhile: the same lamp then provides reading light in the evening and ambient light while watching television.

Placement: Three Pools of Light per Room

Interior designers work with a simple rule: a living room needs at least three light sources at different heights. A tried-and-tested combination: ceiling light (dimmed), a floor lamp in the reading corner, and one or two table lamps – on the sideboard, the windowsill, or the console table behind the sofa. Particularly elegant: two identical table lamps placed symmetrically, for instance on either side of a sideboard.

Style and Material: The Statement Piece

A handcrafted ceramic table lamp makes its presence felt even during the day – as a sculptural object. Hand-painted decorations, crackle glazes, or genuine gold leaf lend a room a character that no mass-produced lamp can achieve. In a modern, minimalist interior, an opulent Italian table lamp acts as a deliberate counterpoint; in a classical setting, it blends in harmoniously.
